Overview: The purpose of this portfolio is to provide ideas, models, and instructional strategies for Reader's Workshop. My hope is that other teachers, parents and students use this portfolio to gain an understanding of the Reader's Workshop Model and how to utilize the information at home or at school.

Reader's Workshop is an instructional model for reading that combines explicit instruction in reading strategies with opportunities for students to practice each reading strategy independently, with a peer, and in small groups. The model includes:

  • Reading Mini-Lesson
  • Purposeful Read Alouds
  • Shared Reading
  • Guided Reading
  • Independent Reading
  • Reading Conferences
  • Closing/Sharing Reading

Reader's Workshop emphasizes the importance of student engagement and interaction between readers and text.

Goals: The goal of Reader's Workshop is to foster independence and a love of reading.
Objectives: There are seven important strategies that all readers must be able to apply to text in order to read and comprehend the content. These strategies are:
  • Making Connection
  • Visualizing Using Sensory Images
  • Making Inferences
  • Asking Questions
  • Monitoring For Meaning
  • Determining What Is Important
  • Synthesizing
